The list of exhibitors leads off with energy and mining companies. They probably get hassled by Atomic unions lead by the likes of Homer Simpson. OCAW is an actual really for real union. I added the enhancement to their logo.
There were also local Nevada marijuana advocates at a convention booth and Ron Paul mentioned the issue in his speech. Given all the oil and gas gridheads, I was pleasantly surprised to hear whispers of support for off-grid permaculture from a few people. Perhaps those folks have a survivalist streak.
Here’s a photo of J. Neil Schulman with Ron Paul at FreedomFest 2009. Ron Paul endorsed Neil’s free downloadable Prometheus winning novel Alongside Night this May. Other luminaries attended this year’s convention such as Peter Schiff and Gerald Celente.
Cory Doctorow’s Prometheus winning 2008 novel Little Brother was available from the Laissez-Faire Books table (I bought one). Normal terrorism themed stories have evildoers being undone by heroic CIA agents or maybe unjustly accused fugitives escaping from The Man. Little Brother goes a bit further and describes resistance to a government crackdown from technically competent youths.
Compared to Schulman, Paul, Schiff and Celente, Doctorow portrays an abusive system fighting against some relatively minor reforms sought by the youthful heroes. The rest see a total collapse and the emergence of a New Order. Maybe that’s a bit Germanic. Let’s say a differently organized social environment, which may or may not be in a libertarian direction.
