Happy New Laws

Law Statue.Happy New Year! Welcome to all the new laws in effect now, giving me a flashback. I was probably the first victim of the cell phone restrictions in California back in July.

To put it in context, I live in Nevada and was driving to L.A. a day or two earlier, during the time when gas was pushing $5/gal and was also reading a number of CalTrans electronic signs warning about “hands free” tickets for not buying some new fangled accessories probably lobbied by the electronics industry.

Read all about it. Warning, there’s profanity and an anti-cop attitude in that comment. I was non-plussed about being mugged and watching someone else get attacked without police “protection”.

I was able to chase the muggers away without wearing spandex and a mask, unlike the “amateur superheroes” described in this Times story sent to me by J. Neil Schulman.

[Update: I almost forgot. A woman I ran into in the laundry room near the incident location told me that despite private security at that shopping center, not to mention our tax dollars at work supporting our local police, there were three robberies there in as many months since July. One of those incidents included robbers herding Starbucks customers into the restroom. According to LAPD, crime is down. D’oh!!!]
