Bike Co-ops: Build or Repair It Yourself
I inherited a “Huffy” bicycle about as rusty as my riding skills, and the rear tire is flat. Otherwise, it seems sturdy enough to carry my weight and has convenient storage that easily fits a six pack. Which of course would only be for green tea or something eco friendly.
Instead of America’s nouveau poor going even more broke at retail bike shops, it looks like there’s a bail out alternative. Some innovative “do it yourself” bike repair and build centers exist around Los Angeles, where I’m visiting for a couple of weeks. Clarence Eckerson, Jr. documents them at the Streetfilms blog and on video.
“So fresh from the oven we cooked up this dish of a Streetfilm from our West Coast swing. We were able to drop by Los Angeles’ famed Bicycle Kitchen to see the secret recipe for how it works, along with other inspired-by shops, Bikerowave and Bike Oven.”
Links to each place are on the Streetfilms page.
