Biodiesel Halves Landscaper’s Fuel Cost

Jatropha, efficient source of vegetable oil for biodiesel.A biodiesel research item about E Coli at Gas 2.0 linked from a front page Digg post led me to another Gas 2.0 story about a landscaper growing 22 acres of jatropha for biodiesel, with the expectation of saving half of the $24,000 per month formerly spent on diesel at the pump.

Looks like my “grow your own . . .” crusade may not be a fantasy. Excerpt:

“Shank’s business previously employed up to 75 people, but the economy has forced layoffs, diminishing the workforce to a mere 40 employees. With the money saved by growing his own fuel, Shank says he will hire more workers.”

“Shank said he chose Jatropha because the desert-native plant can yield up to 10 times as much energy as corn and requires much less water to grow. One acre of Jatropha can produce over 1000 gallons of biofuel a year.”
