Why Joe McCarthy Is Better Than McCain/Palin

Today the Republican Party does not observe the high standards of McCarthyism. Senator McCarthy had the courage of his accusations. When he believed the State Department was a nest of Communists (an undisputed fact) he went after the State Department. He didn’t do so well when he went after the Army. Roy Cohn’s personal life didn’t help. Television didn’t help. Joe McCarthy’s anger didn’t help. But once again Joe McCarthy went after the powerful institution that triggered his paranoia.
Now that Sean Hannity might as well be writing the speeches for the McCain/Palin ticket, we must put up with the attempt to link Barack Obama with terrorism. And how is this being done? Witness the spectacle of William Ayres.
In no time at all, the verbage has gone from “unrepentant” terrorist William Ayres to “former” terrorist William Ayres. What does that mean, exactly? What is Fox News trying to do? What is talk radio trying to do? What are those confusing speeches by Governor Palin all about?
In the good old days of McCarthyism we would know what was what. Good old Joe would be going after the FBI. After all, the FBI closed the books on the dreaded William Ayres. They must have decided he was the Inspector Clouseau of American radical left terrorism. Never mind the technical problems with how evidence was collected. Once a super villain always a super villain! Anyone who doubts that should ask O.J. Simpson.
We knew that Joe McCarthy was going to save us from the Commies. What are McCain and Palin doing to protect us from William Ayres? Why are they letting the FBI get away with this criminal negligence? They have obviously been deceived by this professor and advisor to the current Mayor Daley. If the Republican Party is serious about this menace, every effort should be made to re-open the case against this fiend. Listening to Sean Hannity, one might assume that Ayres single handedly destroyed the Pentagon.
McCarthy would get it.
If the McCain/Palin ticket makes it to the White House we will never again hear the name of William Ayres. If the ticket of Barack O’Biden makes it to the White House we will hear about it every day. How can this be?
The Republican Party couldn’t possibly be using William Ayres in a cynical fashion. They wouldn’t be using him as a stick with which to bludgeon Obama. They couldn’t possibly expect to get away with something like that.
Meanwhile, in the War on Terror, American heroes are dying in the fight against real terrorists. The Republican Party would never demean their service with a political manipulation of the concept of terrorism. Reliving the Sixties is not terribly patriotic. Revisionist neocons have damaged the Republican Party far worse than McCarthyism ever did. No one who was ever a Sixties radical of the left should have been allowed to join the Republican Party until they repudiated SDS tactics. These New Republicans should be the last people to ever use the politics of guilt by association.
