Who Will Pop The Corn In Your Utopia?

Corn species suitable for popping.Watching satellite HD channels on an off-grid homestead without a handy bowl of freshly popped snack food seems like a serious human rights violation to me.

That horrifying snackless scenario prompted some serious research. Is there a practical alternative to driving to the store for that vital popcorn? Or can we just grow it ourselves?

After laboriously struggling to type the word “popcorn” in Google, I waited for the results. Many microseconds later, the screen presented some links, which I couldn’t avoid reading. I actually had to move my eyes back and forth across the screen and click the mouse pointer. Life in the atomic age is tough. But I was rewarded for all this hard work with the solution to this world problem.

It turns out that we are fortunate, for the sake of the world’s hungry comfort food snackers, to still have various species of popping corn available. “Phelan” published a post about growing and preparing popcorn at A Homesteading Neophyte blog.

“Popcorn is a great mainstay on the homestead. You can grow a lot in a little space. The stalks grow 1-4 ears on them. It is a wonderful whole grain that helps with energy. It also makes a great animal feed if you plan on growing your own. 1 1/2 rows of the stuff is enough for my family for 1 year. I still have 2 1/2 rows to pick. eek! What to do with all that popcorn?”

Here’s the Wikipedia entry: Popcorn.

“Air-popped popcorn is naturally high in fiber, low in calories and fat, contains no sodium, and is sugar free, which makes it an attractive snack unless one is limiting carbohydrates.”
