Virgin Earth Challenge CO2 Scrubber Candidate
UK Guardian reports a possible breakthrough that could offset any warming effects of carbon dioxide emissions. A prototype that would remove more CO2 from the air than the device’s carbon cost to build and operate is planned to be demonstrated within two years. A diagram of the “CO2 Extractor” and a description of its discovery and design principle is included in the article.
. . .a group of US scientists say they have made a breakthrough towards creating such a machine. Led by Klaus Lackner, a physicist at Columbia University in New York. . .
Enough of those devices, when the technology matures, could offset oh — I don’t know — jet travel on Virgin Atlantic, perhaps?
The discovery could make the team eligible for the $25m Virgin Earth Challenge, which has pledged the money to the inventor of a way to remove a billion tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere each year, though Lackner said he had not contacted Branson.
