Review: Grow Your Own Pharmacy
Grow Your Own Pharmacy by Linda Gray, published last year by Findhorn Press, describes in detail the nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and other herbal compounds in various plants. The first chapters cover “Ingredients For A Healthy Body” and “Introduction to Gardening.”
The book gives some history, the conditions and methods of sowing each plant and how to care for and ultimately store them. The largest chapter near the end contains recipes for soups, sauces, jams, salads and other dishes. The last chapter has web links to more sites with nutrition, plant data and gardening information.
A logical companion book could be the St. Martin’s Paperback edition of the Rodale Press hardcover, The Green Pharmacy, by James A. Duke, Ph.D. The mass market paperback, available in drugstores (ironically), is organized by ailment and shows which healing herbs may be effective natural remedies instead of expensive and perhaps more toxic patented pharmaceuticals.
