“Most Sustainable” Cuba May Not Be Utopia

Yoani SanchezThe most sustainable place on Earth may not seem like utopia to its subjects, despite some recent welcome reforms.

According to Alvaro Vargas Llosa, author and syndicated columnist, in an article titled “The World’s Bravest Blogger”:

The Cuban government has finally blocked access to a Web log written by Yoani Sanchez, a young woman who has caused a sensation on the communist-ruled island with her daily postings about life in Havana.

Don’t get me wrong, permaculture types. Despite Cuba’s troubles, I might want to bring my theoretical retirement money to Havana due to its lower incarceration rate compared to the U.S.

And the place looks more pedestrian and bike friendly, perhaps thanks to decades of tyrannical Communism making only used American junkers from 1959 or late model Yugo-like POS’s from the Warsaw Pact available. Maybe I could ride Dekzsty’s solar scooter without the hassle I’d get on a U.S. city street or highway.

They’d definitely need to have high speed internet in place before I made the move permanently. Since the U.S. dollar and the Cuban Peso both suck, what do they use in daily life–Mexican Pesos? Is that the “convertible peso” mentioned in Vargas Llosa’s article? I wonder.
