“Loyalty to the State”
The Atlasphere has a column by teacher union and environmentalist bête noire, John Stossel, about a recent court decision against homeschoolers “even though,” Stossel writes, “home- schooled kids routinely outperform government- schooled kids academically.”
An attack by the state education establishment against individuals with legitimate concerns about child safety and indoctrination with poisonous worldviews should not be dismissed out of hand by permaculture adherents.
The cat is finally out of the bag. A California appellate court, ruling that parents have no constitutional right to homeschool their children, pinned its decision on this ominous quotation from a 47-year-old case, “A primary purpose of the educational system is to train schoolchildren in good citizenship, patriotism and loyalty to the state and the nation as a means of protecting the public welfare.”
Even socialists must wonder whose eschaton is being immanentized by the “public child abuse atrocities of education statism” (to shamelessly steal SEK3’s MLL pamphlet title). Tune in, buy more and drop bombs!
If your school district is giving students proper anti-consumerist instruction in off-grid permaculture and self-reliance, maybe you should ignore my right wing screed. Otherwise, join the fight by atheists and religious believers alike for the separation of school and state.
